Monday, September 1st, we celebrate Labor Day. This is a day we celebrate those who work by not working. The concept sounds a little odd but what the heck, I will take it.
I do find it ironic that while the holiday is supposed to give those who work for a living, it becomes one of the busiest shopping days of the year. Most department stores have huge Labor Day sales and the malls and shopping centers are usually packed.
To me a holiday isn’t truly a holiday unless you get to do the following:
Sleep late;
Barbecue;
Quench your thirst;
Visit with family and friends.
I’m sure the people working in the retail stores and restaurants aren’t too stoked about Labor Day. To them it is just another day when people feel compelled to go out and take advantage of bargains. There is probably no one in the retail industry that is saying, “Man I can’t wait for Labor Day to come around so we can be swamped with customers trying to find bargains. It’s going to be awesome.”
I have decided that I am going to give those working as big of a break as possible. I am going to try and get my shopping done before Monday. My goal is to not have to visit a place where anyone has to work. There will be at least one less person they have to deal with.
I myself will probably work at least part of the day. It is not because I have to but because it is what I do. For those who have Monday off, enjoy and try to do all of the basic four things. Try to do number three in moderation. Do one, two and four in excess. For those who have to work. Sorry about that. If there was something I could do, I would. The only thing I can promise is that I will make every effort to bother you as little as possible.
