Mark Wright’s Blog

I am very proud of the design team of Blue Sand Design.  I probably don’t tell them as often as I should.  I have been pleased with their hard work, determination and positive attitude.  So today’s blog is all about the designers.

When I came here, one of my biggest concerns would be how I meshed with the designers.  I have worked with designers and programmers in the past and found them to be somewhat difficult to deal with.  Designers are artists, whether it involves creating the look and feel of a website or putting in the code.  It takes an incredible amount of talent.  Artists for the most part don’t like to have their work questioned or criticized.  Then again who does?

I have a pretty good eye for design and details so it was with a bit of trepidation when I first sat down with the designers to go over changes on a website.  I was expecting resistance and even combativeness.  I was shocked to find that they not only agreed to make the changes, but the reasons why they needed to be made.  It was an incredible relief to me. 

I am also pleased with their ability to want to be better.  They constantly want to learn new techniques and programs.  It can be a very easy situation to be comfortable with a certain style or to think your way of doing something is the only way.  They have taken on new challenges, adapted to deadlines and have never taken any guidance personally.  If I tell them I want a change made or dislike a certain design, they are at least open to listening.  I enjoy sitting down with them and going over concepts.  Most of the time they are pretty close in the concept or spot on.  They have learned to shift gears and reprioritize.  What was most important in the morning sometimes loses priority later in the day.  They have shown a lot of flexibility.  They will also stick to their guns when they think I am off target in an assessment and I respect that.  Many times they are right and will change my mind.   

Since I don’t say it as much as I should, here it is for all to see.  I am proud to have you on the team.  Now get back to work!
